What a Social Media Manager Actually Costs in 2026

Three agencies will quote you three numbers that look nothing alike. Here is what sits behind each one, what the cheap tier quietly leaves out, and how to work out what you are really buying before you sign anything.

What a Social Media Manager Actually Costs in 2026

Ask three agencies what they charge to run your Instagram and you will get three numbers that do not resemble each other. One says £400 a month. One says £2,400. The third will not give you a number at all until you have sat through a discovery call.

That spread is not greed. It is that "social media management" describes about six different jobs, and almost nobody tells you which one they are quoting for. This piece breaks the price bands apart so you can tell.

The four things you might be buying

Before any number means anything, work out which of these you actually need. Most quotes bundle two or three and stay vague about the rest.

  • Scheduling — somebody loads content you supply into a calendar and it goes out on time
  • Content creation — somebody makes the thing. Graphics are cheap. Video is not
  • Community management — somebody answers comments and DMs, every day, in your voice
  • Paid ads — somebody builds and tunes campaigns. The ad spend itself is always separate money

A £400 quote and a £2,400 quote can both be honest. They are usually selling from different rows of that list.

What each price band gets you

£300–800 a month

A junior freelancer, or an agency's entry package. Typically one platform, eight to twelve posts a month, template graphics, a monthly report. Across the German market the equivalent tier starts around €520 and the published packages at this level are explicit that the posts are graphics, not video. In Italy the entry packages start near €200, and one widely advertised starter plan includes four static posts a month and no reels at all.

This band is fine if what you need is a profile that does not look abandoned. It will not generate much.

£800–2,500 a month

The band most small businesses land in. An experienced freelancer or a small agency, two or three platforms, twelve to twenty posts, some video, a planning call. German market surveys put the small-agency tier at €1,200–2,500 and the freelancer tier at €500–1,500. Brazilian agencies quote R$1,200–2,500 for the equivalent scope. In Italy the figure most often cited for a small or mid-sized business is €800–2,000.

Watch the video count here. One Italian agency's €490 tier — mid-band by local standards — includes two reels a month. Two. If short video is the reason you are hiring anyone, ask for the number before you ask for anything else.

£2,500–7,500 a month

Full service. Multiple platforms, proper video production, ad management, weekly reporting, a named account manager. German agencies put this at €2,500–5,000 for full service and €4,000–7,500 for the premium tier. This is a real marketing function, and for most single-location businesses it is more function than the business can absorb.

The same scope can be quoted at £400 or £2,400. The video count is what separates them.

Figures here are published list prices read off live agency pages in September 2026 across the UK, German, Italian and Brazilian markets. They are a representative sample, not a survey. Prices move, and they move faster at the bottom of the range than the top.

The costs that are never in the quote

  • Ad spend. Almost universally separate. If an agency quotes £1,500 and you assumed that included putting money behind posts, you are about to have an awkward call. Budget £300–800 a month minimum on top
  • Setup or onboarding fees. Commonly £400–2,500 once, for strategy and brand guidelines
  • Contract length. Six and twelve month minimums are normal. Ask before you like the number, not after
  • Photo and video shoots. Where packages say "content creation" they often mean design. An actual shoot is usually quoted per session

What about hiring someone directly?

It costs more than the salary, always. A social media manager on a £35,000 salary costs the business closer to £45,000–55,000 once you add employer contributions, pension, equipment, software and training. German market figures put the fully loaded monthly cost of an in-house manager at €3,000–5,500. In Brazil a junior analyst on the books works out to R$7,600–13,500 a month all-in.

There is a second problem nobody mentions. One person is one set of skills. A good writer is rarely a good video editor, and almost never a good ads buyer. You hire one and then discover you needed three.

The question that actually sorts the quotes

Not "how much" and not "how many posts". Ask this: how many original videos of me or my team will exist at the end of the month, and who films them?

It is the question that separates the tiers honestly, because video is the expensive part and everyone knows it. Graphics scale. Filming does not. When you ask it directly, the £400 quote usually turns out to include zero, and the £2,000 quote turns out to include four.

One German agency is unusually straight about this and publishes the arithmetic: roughly fifteen short videos a month, from about €2,000 a month if you shoot the footage yourself, rising to about €3,000 if they send a crew to you. That is a fair price for the work. It is also a clear picture of what the work costs when a person does it.

Where this leaves a small business

If you have a budget over about £2,000 a month and a business complicated enough to need strategy, hire the agency. That is what they are good at, and this article is not going to pretend otherwise.

If you are a one-van plumber, a two-chair salon, a solo consultant — the maths is harsher. The entry tier you can afford is the one that does not include video, and video is the thing that works. You end up paying £500 a month for graphics that do very little, which is how most small businesses conclude that social media does not work for them.

That gap is the reason Solara exists. It is $29 a month. It texts you a script written for your business, you film about two minutes on your phone off a teleprompter, and it cuts, captions, adds b-roll, scores and publishes to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok — every working day, with you approving each post before it goes out. No editor, no timeline, no dashboard to learn.

It does not do everything an agency does. It will not sit in your strategy meeting, will not run your ad campaigns, will not answer your DMs at nine on a Sunday. If those are what you are buying, buy them. But if what you need is that somebody who knows your business appears on camera regularly and the footage becomes finished, published video, that job now has a much cheaper answer than it did two years ago.

Before you sign anything

  • Get the monthly video count in writing, and confirm who does the filming
  • Confirm whether ad spend is included. It almost certainly is not
  • Ask for the notice period and the minimum term
  • Ask who owns the content and the account logins if you leave
  • Ask what happens in August, when your account manager is away

The answers to those five will tell you more than the price will.
