The best AI video editor for short-form content

By Yuval StruttiFounder, Solara AICompetitor prices checked

Short-form quality is not one feature. It is how many production passes a video gets before it goes out, and almost every tool on the market gates the passes that matter behind its middle tier. Solara runs all six on every video at $29 a month — cut, captions, on-screen widgets, b-roll, full-screen animated moments and a mixed soundtrack — with no higher plan to upgrade to and no credit meter counting down.

Below is what each rival actually charges for the same passes, read off their own pricing pages on 28 September 2026. Where one of them is better than us, this page says so — there are two places, and both are named.

Chart comparing entry price with the price at which every production pass is included: Solara $29 with no gap, Submagic $19 to $39, Opus Clip free to $29, Captions metered in credits from $9.99
Entry price is the number every vendor quotes. The number that decides your experience is the one on the right.

The six passes, and who else does them

  1. 1Cut for attention

Trimmed to the seconds people actually watch — dead air, stumbles and throat-clears gone.

Submagic and Opus both do this well. Opus is the best in the category at finding the good thirty seconds inside a long recording.

  2. 2Captions

Burned in and styled, because most of the feed watches on mute.

Submagic is the specialist here and has the largest template library in the category. On its $19 plan the premium templates are not included.

  3. 3Widgets

Your handle, your offer, your prices — on screen at the moment they matter.

Submagic's brand kit starts at $39 and Opus's brand templates at $29. Both are logos and fonts rather than an offer or a price on screen.

  4. 4B-roll

Cutaways that keep a talking head from being a talking head for forty seconds.

Submagic includes free b-roll at $19 and the Storyblocks library at $39. Opus has no b-roll below $29.

  5. 5Full-screen moments

Animated beats that land the point instead of narrating it.

Neither Submagic nor Opus Clip builds designed full-screen scenes. This is the pass with no equivalent on either product at any price.

  6. 6Sound

Score and effects mixed under your voice, never over it.

Submagic includes audio at $19. Opus has no music or sound effects below $29.

What it costs to get a video that looks produced

Entry price is not the number to compare. The number that matters is what you pay before the passes that make a video look produced are switched on.

SolaraThere is no tier above this one. Nothing about the edit is gated.$29 / monthAll six passes, every video
SubmagicAuto-zooms, premium caption templates and the brand kit start at Pro. Starter caps a clip at two minutes.$19 / month$39 / month
Opus ClipNo b-roll, music or sound effects below Pro. The free tier watermarks exports and deletes media after three days.$0 / month$29 / month

The one pass nobody else has

Five of the six are, in some form, available elsewhere. The sixth is not. Designed full-screen animated moments — a beat where the video stops being a person talking and becomes the point, built and animated rather than dropped in from a template — are not something Submagic or Opus Clip offers at any price.

That is the one unqualified capability claim on this page, and it is deliberately the only one. Everything else here is an argument about price and gating, which you can check yourself in about a minute.

Where the others are better

Submagic

Caption styling. It has the largest template library in the category and has been iterating on it longer than anyone.

Needs from you first: Footage you have already filmed.

Opus Clip

Finding the good thirty seconds inside a sixty-minute recording. Nothing else in the category does this as well.

Needs from you first: A long video that already exists — a podcast, a webinar, a recorded talk.

Captions

Its teleprompter, rebuilt in August 2026, which adapts scroll speed to how fast you actually speak. Also AI actors and digital twins, which Solara does not do at all.

Needs from you first: A script you wrote, and the decision to open the app today.

The line under all three is the same, and it is the real difference rather than a feature count: every one of them starts from something you already have. Footage you shot, or an hour of recording to cut down, or a script you wrote. Solara starts earlier — it writes the script for your business, texts you when to film, and takes about two minutes of phone video.

What Solara costs

$29 a month, with all six passes on every video and publishing to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok included. No credits, no meter, no tier above it.

If you would rather see the edit before subscribing to anything, there is a one-off $150 pack of three fully edited videos with no subscription. If you want a team doing the whole thing, the managed plan is $299 a month.

Common questions

What is the best AI video editor for short-form content?
It depends on what you are starting from. If you already have a long recording to cut down, Opus Clip is the best in the category at finding the strongest thirty seconds inside it. If you have footage and want the best caption styling, Submagic has the largest template library. If you want every video to come back fully produced — cut, captioned, with b-roll, on-screen widgets, animated full-screen moments and a mixed soundtrack — Solara does all six passes on every video at $29 a month, with no higher tier and no credit meter.
Which AI video editor produces the highest quality result?
Quality in short-form is mostly a question of how many production passes a video gets, and most tools gate the passes that matter behind their middle tier. Submagic's auto-zooms, premium templates and brand kit begin at $39 a month; Opus Clip has no b-roll, music or sound effects below $29. Solara runs all six passes on every video at $29, including designed full-screen animated moments, which neither Submagic nor Opus Clip offers at any price.
Is there an AI video editor that also posts the video?
Several. Submagic schedules and publishes from inside its editor on every paid tier, and Opus Clip posts to three platforms on its $15 plan and schedules to six on its $29 plan. Captions does not publish at all. Solara publishes to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok on a schedule, and is the only one of the four that also writes the script and prompts you when to film.
What is the best AI video editor for Instagram Reels and TikTok?
For Reels and TikTok specifically, the thing that separates tools is whether captions are burned in and styled rather than platform-generated, and whether the edit holds attention past the first three seconds. Submagic, Opus Clip and Solara all burn in styled captions. Solara additionally cuts for attention, adds b-roll and full-screen animated beats, and publishes to both platforms on a schedule, at $29 a month.
Do I need to be a video editor to use an AI video editor?
No, but most of them still assume you know what to film. Submagic needs footage you have already shot and Opus Clip needs a long video that already exists — both are tools for material you have. Solara writes the script for your business, texts you when to film it, and takes about two minutes of phone video.
Is a free AI video editor good enough for short-form?
For trimming and captions, often yes — CapCut is genuinely capable and Opus Clip has a free tier. The limits usually show up at export: Opus Clip's free plan does not offer watermark-free exports and deletes stored media after three days. Free tools also edit only what you give them, so the hours you save on editing come back as the hours you spend deciding what to post.
