Common questions

What is the best Descript alternative for short-form video?

It depends on where your videos start. If you film short clips of yourself, Solara runs six passes on each one (cut for attention, captions, graphics and animations, b-roll, full-screen moments and sound) and posts it to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and LinkedIn, from $29 a month. If you record interviews with remote guests, Riverside records them and edits them as text, from $29 a month. If your videos start as long recordings, Opus Clip cuts them into shorts. If you want to make every cut yourself for free, CapCut does that.

Is there a free alternative to Descript?

CapCut: its Free plan exported 1080p with no watermark when we ran one clip through it on 14 October 2026, and you make the cuts yourself. Opus Clip's free plan exports 1080p with a watermark, and VEED's exports 720p with a watermark, like Descript's own. Solara has no free plan. Try it free: 3 videos, clips up to 90 seconds. Post and schedule them free; downloading comes with a plan.

Is CapCut better than Descript?

For short videos you cut by hand on a timeline, CapCut is free, and its Pro plan is $19.99 a month by CapCut's own guide. Descript is built for long recordings you edit as text: its Hobbyist plan is $24 a month, and its free plan exports 720p with a watermark.

Is Riverside better than Descript?

For recording guests, Riverside is the specialist: it records each person on their own track in up to 4K, edits by text, and publishes to YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Instagram and LinkedIn from its $29 Pro plan. It has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. Descript records remote guests too, in Rooms, has a free plan, and starts at $24 a month.

What uses up a Descript plan?

Two meters. Media minutes count every minute of audio or video you upload or record (10 hours a month on Hobbyist), and AI credits pay for AI tools such as Underlord, Studio Sound and Remove filler words (400 a month on Hobbyist). Neither rolls over. Solara counts only the videos you export: uploading, editing, trying styles, previews and asking the AI for changes never count.

Prices read on each vendor’s own page on How we checked

Every competitor figure was read on the vendor’s own pricing page or help center on 22 October 2026. CapCut’s pricing page shows local currency, so its dollar price comes from its own Standard vs Pro guide. Prices move, so check the vendor’s page before relying on one.

We ran one clip through Descript, CapCut, Opus Clip and Captions on 14 October 2026; Riverside and VEED were not in that run. Solara publishes this page, so it has a stake: each tool’s card says when to choose it over Solara. Descript and the other names here are trademarks of their owners; this page is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
